Willie Thacker ~ 2020

6 days, 17 hours and some change

Posted on Facebook by Kimm Shock Wright

It’s 9:38, Monday January 20, 2020 and I get a message that says, “I have one mile left".

I’m sitting in our van at the Southern terminus of the Pinhoti Trail on Flagg Mountain waiting for him. The temperature reads 21 degrees, and the sky is clear you can see nothing but the stars shining through the tall pines. I finally see a light dancing through the woods, coming closer at around 10:00pm. When he hits the trail head, Willie is a bit overcome with much earned emotion, he had just finished a 63 mile day, which seems like it should be a record in itself. Willie's accomplishment is greater than the 63 mile day.

347.4 ,miles in 6 Days, 17 hours and some change. At age 18 , Willie Thacker now holds the FKT for a self supported hike on the Pinhoti Trail. With only 12 lbs in his backpack, He began his quest on January 14th, to break the previous FKT held by Jeff “Legend” Garmire at 8 days, 1 hour, 19 minutes that was set in 2019.

Willie, a native of Niskayuna, NY, chose the Pinhoti Trail in part to challenge the previous FKT and in admiration of Garmire, but logistically the Pinhoti trail was close to family in Atlanta, GA.
When asked what types of food he ate to stay on track, he said he didn’t cook, but ate a lot of chips for breakfast, because of their high fat, high carbs, and high salt. Then he said he depended on a lot of bars, Nature Valley, and Clif bars were his go too. He joked “I ate a lot of gas station hot dogs along the way, and they were so good” For a non-hiking person, that is crazy to think about, but when you average walking 52 miles per day, you can pretty much eat anything you want.

After a hot shower and a good night Sleep on a real bed, Willie was hesitant to sign our hiker wall at the Pinhoti Outdoor Center as FKT, and again showing great humility on Flagg Mountain where he met Legendary hiker and Flagg Mountain Caretaker, “Nimblewill Nomad” Sunny Eberhart. Sunny’s response regarding Willies humbleness, “Look at me Willie, you Look right here” gesturing him to look him in the eyes. “Walt Whitman said, “If you’ve done it, it ain’t braggin” ” with a good laugh, Willie signed the book Willie Thacker FKT Pinhoti Trail 1/20/2020. When speaking of Willie, Sunny said “You’ve got some grit son. Now you can carry this with you forever”

Congratulations Willie Thacker, Pinhoti Trail FKT January 2020
