ATA Work Trip, January 2007
Volunteers: Anthony Alexander, Philip Alexander, Hugh Hickman, Teresa Huckaby,
Ms. Kenny, Gene Padgham
Anthony, Philip, and Gene continued building tread, working ever closer to reaching
Woods Road. Probably less than 50 feet now remain to finish the segment to Woods Road.
Ms. Kenny and Teresa fire raked the trail on the west side of Woods Road to the branch,
and Hugh continued chainsaw work to clear the corridor going up slope toward the state
line.

As so often happens, the meteorologists missed on their weather forecast. A day that was
purported to be cold, gloomy, windy, and contain some snow flurries turned out to be a
near ideal winter day for trail work.
The many hands resulted in a very productive outing. A footbridge was constructed and
installed over the branch that parallels Woods Road on the western side. After
completion of that task and a leisurely lunch, a good effort was put forth in extending the
trail. Hugh and Teresa continued the chainsaw work to open the corridor to the state
line, making it to the top of the ridge where the trail runs the rest of the way on its
approach to Indian Mountain from the Georgia side. The rest of the volunteers continued
with the arduous task of building tread. The small segment that remained to be
completed on the east side of Woods Road was completed, and a substantial portion on the
west side was done. The long run involving a lengthy stretch of side hilling as the climb
begins from Woods Road to the state line is now well underway. The ATA appreciates
the efforts of all its volunteers in pushing this undertaking another workday closer to
completion.
Next month will probably find us at the Salem Church Road crossing, as we attempt to
restore some order to the chaos in that area that the recent logging has caused. If you are
a hiker interested in giving some time and effort to the cause, please consider joining us.
Our normal workday is the third Saturday of every month. If you lack tools…no
problem!! We will gladly supply you with an implement to work with.

Volunteers met at the trail crossing on Salem Church Road at 9:30 A.M. It was a pleasant
weather day with partially sunny skies and a cool breeze…just right for trail work.
The primary objective for the day was to reroute trail on north side of the Salem Church
Road as a result of logging activities. The trail remains in original location heading north
from Hurricane Creek bridge to the Salem Church Road. After crossing the road headed
north, the trail has been diverted westerly, about twenty feet in, and connects to the
existing logging road. This road will now be used (at least temporarily) as the northerly
route to Hawkins Hollow. About 300 yards north on this road, the trail diverts to the
right at a y-intersection with an older, currently unused roadbed and reconnects with the
original trail location. (The old timers will remember this as the road we used to walk in
on when we were originally constructing the trail).
A footbridge was also constructed over the first branch crossing before reaching the
Hawkins Hollow camping area.
Lunch was taken at the tent platform at Hawkins Hollow, at which time a board meeting
was held. After completion of the board meeting, the group decided to examine the trail
situation going south from Hurricane Creek over Davis Mountain to HWY278. After
ascending the first ridgeline going south from Hurricane Creek, the trail is
unrecognizable and impassible until reaching the main dirt road at the foot of Davis on
the north side, due to the ongoing logging operations. A reroute will have to be
determined, and for now, the safest approach for thru hikers will be to road walk from
the 278 trailhead to the Salem Church crossing. At present, the trail from the Davis
Mountain shelter on south to Hwy 278 is intact.
Sean McGrath drove up from Enterprise, Alabama to work with us, and we thank him
for his efforts. Hopefully there will be opportunities for him to join us on future work
trips.
