The Pinhoti Trail
A Southeast Region Appalachian Trail Connector

The Trailbed - Woods Trail & Road Walks

Woods Trail
The Pinhoti is 335 miles long, beginning at Section 1 in the southwest at Flagg Mountain
to Section 31 in the northeast at the Benton MacKaye Trail. The trail is divided roughly
in half by the Alabama / Georgia state line.

The longest stretch of woods trail without a road walk is on the Alabama side from mile
34.3 ~ Bull Gap Trailhead to mile 173.9 ~ Jackson Chapel Trailhead, just past the AL / GA line. The
distance is 139.6 miles, Sections 4 thru 13. All of these sections are within the Talladega National
Forest, with the exception of Section 13, which travels on some private land and some Alabama Forever
Wild property.

The Georgia side has 2 stretches of woods trail. One is down on the southwest end from mile 203.3 ~
Simms Mountain Trailhead to mile 273.1 ~ Dug Gap Trailhead. The Distance is 69.8 miles, Sections 18
thru 25.

The other one is up on the northeast end from mile 304.2 ~ Baker Branch Trailhead to mile 334.9 ~
Benton MacKaye Trail. The distance is 30.7 miles, Sections 28 thru 31. Both of these woods trail
sections are within the Chattahoochie National Forest.

Bear in mind that the Georgia section of the Pinhoti is a lot newer than the Alabama section. The woods
trail sections in Georgia follow mostly Forest Service roads where the trailbed hasn’t been cut yet.
When I say this is a woods trail, I’m saying the woods trails in Georgia don’t travel on county or state
paved roads, except in very short stretches.

The total mileage of completed woods trail in both Alabama and Georgia is 240.1 miles.

Also, on the southwest end of the Alabama side, the section directly below Bull Gap, Section 3, will
possibly be about 12 miles of new cut trailbed by the end of the year. About 7 miles have been cut so far
(spring 09).

Road Walks
There are 3 major road walks on the Pinhoti Trail. The first one is in Alabama on the southwest end of
the Pinhoti from mile 0.0 ~ Flagg Mountain Trailhead to mile 34.3 ~ Bull Gap Trailhead. The distance is
34.3 miles, Sections 1 thru 3.

About 3 miles of the Pinhoti in Section 1 is on Flagg Mountain, which is in the Weogulfka State Forest.
Most of this 3 mile trailbed has been cut. About 12 miles of the Pinhoti in Section 3 is on Rebecca
Mountain, which is in the Talladega National Forest. Over half of this 12 mile trailbed has been cut.
When these 15 miles of new trail are complete, the distance of this road walk section will be 19.3 miles.
All of the property between the Weogulfga State Forest and the Talladega National Forest is private
land.

The second road walk section is just across the state line into Georgia near the middle of the Pinhoti
from mile 173.9 ~ Jackson Chapel Trailhead to mile 203.3 ~ Simms Mountain Trailhead. The distance is
29.4 miles, Sections 14 thru 17. All of the property surrounding these sections is private land.

The third road walk section is also in Georgia near the northeast end of the Pinhoti from mile 273.1 ~
Dug Gap Trailhead to mile 304.2 ~ Baker Branch Trailhead. The distance is 31.1 miles, Sections 26 thru
27. All of the property surrounding these sections is private land.

The total mileage of road walks in both Alabama and Georgia is 94.8 miles, which will soon change to 69.5.

The Future
Here is an example of a recent land purchase for 5 miles of new trail corridor on Section 3 of the
Pinhoti Trail. This section is in the Talladega National Forest but there were 1100 acres on top of
Rebecca Mountain that was owned by a family. A private donor from North Carolina stepped up and
offered a $550,000 donation toward the purchase. The Conservation Fund used that money along with
their money to buy the land for $1,500,000 and then sold it to the US Forest Service.

So let's see, that's $300,000 for each mile of trail corridor and we have almost 70 miles to go...
Fortunately, we have some pretty creative folks working on this.
